Have you ever wondered why you look the way you look, behave the way you behave, why you have certain features that your siblings do not. Well what about wondering why you think the way you think, or why you might have certain illness that no one else in your family has. Well that is when the study of epigenetics comes into play.
Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence – hence the name epi- (Greek: επί- over, above, outer) -genetics. It refers to functionally relevant modifications to the genome that do not involve a change in the nucleotide sequence. ~ Wikipedia
In laymen terms according to Learn Genetics It is The development and maintenance of an organism is orchestrated by a set of chemical reactions that switch parts of the genome off and on at strategic times and locations. Epigenetics is the study of these reactions and the factors that influence them.
Epigenetics is one study that has always intrigued me, only because I consider myself a very spiritual person that believes that the things that our ancestors experience in the past can and has influenced. Our thoughts, actions, and health in the present. This may be a little far fetched for many to believe however with the great study of epigenetics and doctors like Weston price of the Weston price foundation. Many of thee once speculations are coming to spotlight as actual and factual proofs that has and is happening at the moment.
Yes, our genes are affected by the things that our grandmother ate and not have eaten, yes our thought capacities are affected by environmental experiences that our dad might have had. yes we could develop some sort of illness that was laid dormant in our genes and triggered by some sort of toxin all because somewhere down the line a gene was not properly developed.
If you have never heard of Dr. Weston Price and his organization than should really read his study on how nutrition has affected generations down to this day. Truly groundbreaking material. Dr. Kate Shannan is another person who I have come to adore. In her Book ” Deep Nutrition – Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food” examines the whole concept of epigenetics and how nutrition generations back can affect your health and beauty(how you look).
Review coming soon!
So when I head and saw the Free Documentary on The Ghost In Your Genes – A documentary on epigenetics, I was so stoked!
I was a Little kid in a candy store ready to be filled with more information and share it with you. The Ghost in your Genes is a five part video showcase explaining what epigenetics is and how it works. This five part series is really fascinating and I am sure you will find just as eye opening as I have.
You will not be disappointed.
I would love to know your thoughts on the whole issue.
