If You Love It, It Will Grow : A Guide to Growing Long Afro- Texured Hair!

Yes, Indeed.

If you love it, it will grow!

I recently had the chance to read Dr. Phoenyx Austin’s Book “If You Love It, It Will Grow” A guide to Growing Long afro textured hair.

Now there are many books out there such as Ultra Black Hair Growth and Chicoros “How to Grow Afro- Textured hair. All of these book are great in their own way and I own every single one of them. However, the one I will have to say hands down is my favorite is Dr Phoenyx’s If you love it will grow.

This one small compact book is just the right book for those of us with kinky, kinky…., textured hair. It can be so hard to find someone with almost the exact same hair texture as myself., Tightly coiled and no curls nowhere to be found. So when I saw this book, I was stoked! It was just what I had been searching for; a great reference book full of tips and information on natural hair care for us textured hair girlys.

The format of the book is really simple and straightforward, making it easy to digest and apply the methods right away. It does not feel overwhelming, in fact it was a pleasure to read and I almost finished reading the book, the same day I got it!

That’s how delightful it was to read the book.

In the beginning Dr. Phoenyx tells her personal back story on her own issues with the creamy crack, hair breakage and the psychological drama that she experienced from growing up with a relaxer from a young age.

She gives detail accounts on the experiences she had to overcome and learning to love herself and her hair.

” This book is about growing hair to longer lengths, but is also about a deeper message; a message of self love and self acceptance. For many women, hair is not just hair. There is a great interconnectedness between how women feel about their hair and how they feel about themselves. ” ~ Dr. Phoenyx Austin

Yes, this book is one that will help you to realize that loving your hair is also about loving your self in all areas of your life. From choosing the right foods to eat, to making sure you workout and scheduling time to love and nurture your hair.

I love how in Chapter 2 Dr. Phoenyx lets you know, as it says in the bible that love is Nurturing, Love is kind, Love is patient. It protects and shields from harm. She questions you to question yourself whether or not you love your hair. If you read this book you will see why she does this and how eye opening it will be for you as you read the rest of the book.

Yes this book is the bomb.com!

The Rest of the book is laid out in the format of informing you on the skills, techniques, whys and how’s of natural textured hair care.

• Chapter 2 – What Does ” If you Love it, It will Grow Really Mean?

Beauty Secrets of the Bible – A Review

Have you ever wanted to know how women and men back in ancient times kept themselves beautiful.  Many women back than did not have to use the fancy product that we know use, instead they used natural and organic material right out their environment to smell good and look beautiful. That is why in Beauty Secrets of the Bible – The Ancient Arts of Beauty and Fragrance will help you to discover what is right at your disposal also.

In this book, author Ginger Garrett introduces women to the beauty and health secrets of our ancient sisters. While few people would think of the Bible as a book of diet or health, much less beauty, Garrett shows us otherwise. She claims that ancient women had a similar desire as modern women do to be as attractive as they can. She exposes facts about the health and beauty industry that we’ve become increasingly concerned about: that the products we slather on our skin on a daily basis are not only unregulated, but are often toxic and unsafe.

As an alternative, she offers recommendations and tips for beauty treatments that are straight out of the pages of the Bible. They’re so simple that they’ll seem almost too good to be true. For example, using one drop of honey on damp skin instead of expensive moisturizers. Interestingly, this one tip is recommended by a hot Hollywood makeup artist!

The book does a good job of using modern scientific evidence to prove the efficacy of these simple treatments. As an example, vinegar was a staple of ancient times. We now know that vinegar helps the body keep a stable blood sugar and slows the absorption of carbs. Another example is flax, which featured heavily in the diets of ancient women. Flax acts as an anti-inflammatory, which has the effect of slowing aging.

The first chapter of the book helps the reader to reevaluate her current ideas around beauty by using scripture and meditation. This part of the book may not interest you if you’re not religious, but it might just get you thinking about our modern cultural ideals around beauty.

Chapter Two gets to the heart of why so many women have weight issues, and what to do about it. Chapter Three points to the dangers of modern cosmetic ingredients and Chapters Four thru Seven offers you safer, natural alternatives and recipes for totally safe yet spa worthy beauty regimens.

To top if off, she offers instructions on how to host a “Bible Secrets of the Bible party”.

If you love to make your own beauty treatments, you’ll love this book, you can find it at Beauty Secrets of the Bible!

My Summer Reading List.

I’ve taken it upon myself to catch up on some of the books that I have bought, but not yet had a chance to read. I love to read and it is one of the many pleasures that bring me joy and peace of mind. Reading is an escape of the mind from the day to day troubles of the world.  When I read, I do not not read many fiction books. So when I do read, I have to make sure they are something that I can learn and benefit from.

Last Child In The Woods By Richard Louv

You ever sit back and remember how it was when you were a child, and how you were able to go outside to play on your own. Not worrying about the stranger next door, not caring about the car coming down the road, or even a care in the world about what might bite you.

The care freeness that came with just being a kid outside and loving nature, playing on the playground, finding insects and the great discovering of wonderment of learning about the world. That is how it was when we were younger, but now there is a great fear in the world. A sad fear of nature and the possibility of what might happen. Parents are afraid of allowing their children to go outside and explore life, and the simple beauty of nature.

Nature is the Ultimate Playground for kids, and nothing can even come close to it.

Even I have to admit that even I for a bit when my oldest son was younger worried because of his huge allergies to insect bites and what not. However I do not want my children to grow up with ever experiencing the sounds of nature, such as the birds in the early morning, the greenery of the woods, or even the joy of even finding a wounded animal that might still be alive enough to salvage and help back to life.

Every year parents spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on toys and activities for their kids. While many of things are great for keeping young minds and bodies active, many of them are just plain out unnecessary. Sure kids need structured play, but they also need “free” play and this is easy to do when the world’s largest playground is right outside your back door.

Why not let them play outside?

Every toy, book, and TV show that comes out has been designed and redesigned several times in order to make it educational and entertaining for children. The great thing about nature is that, while being entertaining and stimulating to the imagination, it’s also educational. Nature can teach children the basics of science, economics, and creativity.

It’s cheap. Depending on where you live, exploring nature is usually pretty inexpensive, if not free. It may mean going out in your backyard, local park, or perhaps going to the local nature center or state park (which usually have low cost fees or memberships). This way, you don’t have to pay for expensive toys, jungle gyms, or memberships to expensive entertainment centers, but you still get the benefit of stimulating and educational play.

I for one limit the amount of games or toys that require batteries to make work.

It makes them think. Lately there’s been a trend in education towards inquiry based learning. Researchers have found that if students explore and experiment to figure out answers on their own, they’re going to learn better, and retain more information. It also helps them develop skills to be able to learn things on their own later.

What better environment to learn things than out in nature.

That is why I love the book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv it is a great testimony to the whys and how’s of why we should allow our children more free time outside, showing us even scientific studies that kids who play outside more are smarter and more relaxed.

His book covers the topics of:

  • The new Relationship between children and nature
  • Why the young and the rest of us need nature
  • The best of intentions why many don’t play outside anymore
  • The Nature Child Reunion
  • The Jungle Backyard
  • Wonderland Opening the Frontier
  • To be Amazed

While it’s easy to forget, childhood isn’t just for learning about how to be an adult, it’s also about having fun. Nature gives kids a chance to use their imagination and be free to just be kids.

I recommend that you also take a look at I love Dirt! A great resource for parents who want to learn some new activities to get their kids back into nature.

In Defense of food – An Eater’s Manifesto Review

Sitting here next to my kids by the side of the pool, I thought it would be a great time to let you guys know about a great book that I  have been raving about. If you have read my last posts on how to make real food and how food can affect your mood.

You will see the importance of why I am writing this post.

In Defense of Food – A Eaters manifesto is a awesome book on how to eat real food, yet in a better way  explains that we should just plain out eat period!

“Eye Opening and appetite altering” – Audrey Van Buskirk, Portland Tribune

Michael Pollan has created a book that explains that we should not be afraid to eat, in fact that we should embrace food. And not be afraid of it as if it were some sort of calorie ridden enemy that could sabotage our weight loss goals.

The name of this book justify exactly what it is about!

In Defense of Food Michael Pollan starts out telling us about the history of food.

That food was about the pleasure and the enjoyment, family gatherings and the spiritual benefit. He explains that in the beginning it was not so complicated, people ate and ate for a reason. For a biological necessity and internal pleasure.

The Second part of the book goes into great detail about the rise of nutritionism, and how it came into play. How different nutrients were discovered and studied on how they  interrelated with each other.

However with all this rise of nutritionism much more was being created.

The food scientists came into play discovering that they could create and modify ingredients by altering the chemical make up of the food.  They purposed that they could take out and add back in what they thought suited the overall process.

Which gave the rise to processed foods.

The whole thing is really quite interesting, especially when he goes into detail about the mind washing of modern America. How big government has been able to convince  them to believe that everything they were already eating was not healthy for them.

But something out of box would do the trick.

Go Figure:)

So the rise of the food industrialization and a turning point  in which America would than plummet to the lows of obesity, heart disease, cancers, in-fertility, with a huge role of spectrum disorders in children to name a few.

Yes, everything we eat correlates to how we feel.

Michael Pollan wraps it up in the end by letting us know how we can get back to real food, by following simple steps. He shows us what to do, what we need to avoid and really its  pretty simple!

This book as in my opinion is one the most informative books out there to date on how we should govern our thoughts about how we view food. It was a delight to read.

And I am sure you will enjoy it too.

Hair Story – Untangling the Roots Of Black Hair In America

I had the chance to read Hair Story the History Of Black Hair in America, this past month or so.  And boy let me tell you what a book. If you are really wanting to know why we as black women and men think or have thought about our hair the way that we do then you  need to read this book.  This book is full of information about the history of African American hair starting in Africa, than on to the slave trade and the downhill transgression of  the feelings towards our hair.

It goes deep into the mindset of people with afro centric hair and why society puts so much undue attention on our hair, and why we as a people feel sometimes like our hair is not good enough to wear in its natural state, and why many people as adults have no  idea what their hair texture is or even how to take care of it properly.  We as a people starting from early on were put in place and stripped of our culture and than that led to the unacceptance  of our hair  by America, race wars within our race between light an dark skinned, good hair vs so called bad hair and so forth.

The history of black America goes into all that and than some and is certainly one book for anyone that is thinking about going natural should read.   I have not been disappointed.

“An Engaging look at what has become a major status symbol among African-Americans…….an impressive work of cultural history” -Book Page

Here are some of the Topics in the Book:

  • Black Hair In Bondage
  • No Excuse for the Nappy
  • Revolutionary Root – Naturals, Afros, and the Changing Politics Of Natural hair
  • The Business of Black Hair
  • Politically Incorrect – Black Hair New Attitude
  • The Burden of Proof: Explaining Black Hair Culture
  • Hair Today, Hair Tomorrow

I highly Recommend this book to all newly naturals as Required Reading for Sure!
